SPBL Marketing
Marketing of SPBL will be done through local media, social network sites, and through member support. Ongoing advertising opportunities with local media will be made available at reduced rates negotiated by SPBL. We may decide to have one or more mandatory ad campaigns per year but costs will be kept as low as possible with recognition that the recent economy has hurt everyone. You can get involved by joining one of our committees, volunteering to help with the membership drive, or providing a service to the organization, which will benefit all of the membership.
Member Directory
SPBL will publish a member directory each year. This directory will be distributed throughout South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Scarborough. A current member directory can be downloaded and or printed by any member or the public. Go to side right side menu and click on "Member List".
Eligibility
Businesses that are eligible to join must be independent and located in South Portland or Cape Elizabeth. "Locally owned" means the business must be headquartered and registered in Maine, and the owner must be a resident of Maine. This includes any employee owned and cooperatively owned Business, or non-profit, but not government entities. "Independent" means the owner(s) have complete decision-making authority over the business.
Our Mission
The mission of South Portland Buy Local is to support locally owned businesses in South Portland with our brand, educate the public about the benefits of buying locally, work to encourage entrepreneurship in our community, foster good working relationships with local government and non-profits, and market ourselves effectively through the local media.
SPBL History
South Portland Buy Local was launched in February, 2010, after 12 months of discussions and planning by a diverse group of local businesses. South Portland Buy Local has incorporated as a non-profit with the State of Maine, elected a Board of Directors, Officers, and an Advisory Committee Chair. All officers and board members participate on a volunteer basis; there are no paid members or staff. SPBL has a local outside volunteer accountant who is handling all dues, bookkeeping and accounting.

Shift Your Shopping

Shift Your Shopping, started in Somerville & Cambridge in 2009, is now a national campaign to encouraging our community to Choose Local & Independent this Holiday Season. As customers, we are about to collectively spend a large portion of our annual shopping budget between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. If you join us in shifting those dollars to locally owned, independent businesses, we’ll generate 2-3 times as much economic activity in our community than if we had spent our money at a national chain.
